A vaccine against overcalling

Years ago, I taught myself the following trick to guard against calling delta waves in the temporal regions and elsewhere spike-and-wave. If you see something resembling the following and wonder whether this is a spike-and-wave...

...advance the EEG so that the delta wave is just off the screen to the right and so that the sharply-contoured wave that precedes it appears at the edge of the screen on the right, as is the case below. You will then learn to recognise that the "sharp" component is identical to the background rhythms. This is a good means of reminding your brain that the temporal association is misleading to "system one" in your visual brain. I might even patent the vaccine :)
