The above are frontal alpha frequencies, physiologically normal. Notice the gradual ascent and descent of the waveforms.
The patient is asleep (stage II sleep). 14- and 6-Hz postive bursts (above and below, mostly 14 Hz positive bursts), normal
The following is also during sleep:
During the first 5 seconds the patient is asleep, followed by arousal (there is an F-wave, heralding arousal), followed by generalised theta frequencies and then alpha frequencies, with a small amount of movement and EMG artifact. By the next page the patient is awake, with a normal low amplitude mixed-frequency background and a slight increase in his heart rate after arousal
